John Lancaster Spalding was an American educator and writer, best known as the author of the first major biography of Abraham Lincoln. The first edition of "Lincoln’s memoirs" was published in 1885, just eight years after Lincoln’s death. The book became a bestseller, sparking intense interest in Lincoln's life and presidency. Spalding revised the original work for three editions, the last of which appeared in 1906: A Study of Life and Character: A Biography of Abraham Lincoln (1885), and A Life of Abraham Lincoln (1890).
